The Benefits of Mulching Your Garden Beds Before Winter

A fresh layer of mulch in autumn protects your plants, smothers weeds and saves you work all the way through to summer.

The Benefits of Mulching Your Garden Beds Before Winter

Mulch is one of those small jobs that pays you back for months. Spread a fresh layer over your garden beds in autumn and you'll protect your plants through winter, cut down your weeding, and have beds that look neat and finished the whole time.

Why autumn is a great time to mulch

Mulching before winter locks in the warmth and moisture your soil still holds from summer, giving roots a buffer against cold snaps and drying winds. It also gets ahead of the winter weeds — a thick layer of mulch blocks the light they need to germinate, so far fewer come up in the first place.

What a good layer of mulch does

  • Holds moisture in the soil so you water less
  • Smothers weeds before they start
  • Insulates roots against temperature swings
  • Slowly feeds the soil as it breaks down
  • Gives beds a clean, tidy, finished look

Get the depth right

Aim for around 5–7cm of mulch. Too thin and weeds push straight through; too thick and water struggles to reach the roots. Keep it pulled back a little from the base of trunks and stems so they don't stay damp and rot.

Pair it with a tidy-up

Mulch looks its best — and works best — over a bed that's been weeded and lightly pruned first. If your beds have gotten away from you, a quick prune and mulch combo is the fastest way to reset the whole garden before winter. We can supply and spread quality mulch, or work with what you've already got.
